What Are the Differences Between the Dell G3 and the Dell G5?

Configurations

The Dell G3 supports Intel Core i7 processors. On the other hand, the Dell G5 can be customized with either Intel Core or AMD Ryzen CPUs.

When it comes to the graphics card, there are a few options. The NVIDIA RTX cards may be set to the maximum on the Dell G3 and Dell G5. The AMD Radeon card may also be installed in the Dell G5.

Both storage choices allow for up to 512GB SSD and 1TB HDD storage configurations. Both gaming laptops have a maximum RAM capacity of 32GB (16GB for each slot).

Design & Build Quality

Both gaming laptops have been redesigned by Dell. They are much superior than the preceding versions in terms of appearance. And they’re designed in a contemporary style.

The Dell G3 resembles the HP Pavilion in appearance. It’s more akin to an HP Pavilion in black and blue. At the bottom-right and bottom-left, the display bends.

It also doesn’t have two hinges this time. However, there is one strong hinge. The Dell G5’s display sports a blue Dell logo in the center.

Review of the Dell G3

Blue accents may also be seen along the corners of the gaming laptop. The laptop pads on which the Dell G3 rests.

The Dell G5 is only available in one color, matte black, and is completely built of plastic. Because it is a cheap gaming laptop, this is to be anticipated.

There is a lot of flex in the display lid and keyboard. But there’s no need to be frightened. The Dell G3 isn’t exactly a gaming laptop that’s tiny and light.

It is 0.85 thick and weighs 5.4 pounds (2.45 kg). It may not be the thinnest or lightest on the market. It is, however, still portable enough to be carried about.

An SD card reader, 2x USB 2.0, USB 3.1, USB Type-C, RJ-45, audio jack, HDMI, and an AC converter are among the ports available.

Aside from the Thunderbolt 3 port, which it lacks. It offers an excellent variety of ports.

Overall, the Dell G3 is a straightforward and attractive notebook. With the gamer design, Dell did not go crazy. If you want a more minimalist design, the prior model will suffice.

On the other side, the Dell G5 has no curved edges. It seems to be a rectangular laptop with a few curled edges. It also has a more subdued appearance than the Dell G3.

It features blue accents, but not the kind that runs down the laptop’s body. It’s a more subdued kind of accent.

On the front display, the I/O labeling and branding are blue. The Dell logo is also blue on the display lid. When seen from certain angles, the laptop appears silver or green.

The laptop has grills that span the length of its edges. It now has a more aggressive appearance. The

The Dell G5 similarly has a single hinge design in the middle. Black and white are the two colors offered. The white, on the other hand, is reserved for the Dell G5 Special Edition (SE).

The Dell G5 is constructed of both plastic and magnesium for its build quality. The laptop’s keyboard deck is made of magnesium, while the rest is made of plastic.

The display cover flexes, as you would have predicted, but only to a certain extent. There is practically no flex in the keyboard deck.

Review of the Dell G5

This model’s weight and thickness have been reduced by Dell. But neither thin or light enough to be referred as as such. The Dell G5 is an inch thick and weighs 5.6 pounds (2.6 kg).

You can still take it around, but the weight will be noticeable.

A Thunderbolt 3 port, 3x USB 3.2 ports, SD reader, combination audio jack, RJ 45, tiny display port, and power jack are among the ports available.

On a side note, the Thunderbolt connector is only available on versions with RTX or above graphics cards. The majority of the ports are located on the rear of the device.

The Dell G5, like the Dell G3, is a plain-looking laptop. It is, however, cleaner and has a more subdued style.

Teardown/Disassembly/Upgradeability

The Dell G3 is simple to open. Using a screwdriver, remove a couple of the screws. You also have access to the components on the inside.

The WLAN card, HDD, SSD, and RAM may all be upgraded from there. Each RAM slot can hold up to 16GB of RAM, for a total of 32GB RAM.

The Dell G5 is in the same boat. To release the bottom cover, you’ll need a flat edge. After getting inside, you may update the RAM, HDD, M.2 SSD, and WLAN card.

The RAM slots, like those in the Dell G3, can hold up to 16GB apiece. There is one more thing. There is no HDD bay on the Dell G5 Special Edition. Instead, it’s been taken over by its 90-watt-hour battery.

Thermals

Gaming laptops generate a lot of heat. However, the issue remains: which one is hotter? It’s a choice between the Dell G3 and the Dell G5.

The Dell G3 does not have any side vents. However, towards the rear and on the underside. The CPU and GPU share two fans and two heat pipes on the inside of the laptop.

The cooling system, although having so few heat pipes, is remarkably cool (90 degrees plus).

It only reaches such temperatures when it is subjected to loads other than gaming for extended periods of time, such as stress testing.

The temperature for gaming is between 70 and 80 degrees Celsius, which is ideal.

What’s even better? Even when the temperature is over 90 degrees Celsius, it does not thermal throttle. It can maintain Turbo rates for lengthy periods of time without throttling.

The only drawback is that the fans become quite noisy as they work extra hard. The thermals do an excellent job at keeping the system cool overall. As a result, you won’t have any issues there.

The optimum temperatures and Performance may be achieved by undervolting and adding thermal paste.

The Dell G5 gaming laptop is a hot piece of equipment. Despite the presence of two fans and four heat pipes. The gaming laptops have a high operating temperature.

We’re talking about temperatures of at least 90 degrees. Both the CPU and the GPU share two of the heat pipes. The remaining two are devoted to the CPU and GPU, respectively.

When it comes to the vents, there are a few things to consider. There are two at the back, two on each side, and two in the bottom. One of the causes might be the vents.

Because the holes are insufficiently big to allow enough hot air to escape.

The gaming laptop’s thermals are insane. It’s essential to undervolt and use thermal paste. This lowers the temperature and prevents Performance declines.

A cooling fan, in addition to undervolting and repasting, will make a huge difference.

The Dell G5 is a hotter disaster right out of the box than the G3. The Dell G3’s cooling system is much superior than the Dell G5’s cooling system.

Undervolting and repasting will minimize excessive temperatures, improve Performance, and extend the lifetime of the gaming laptop to get the best results.

Display

The Dell G3 is a budget-friendly laptop. And manufacturers must choose between sacrificing construction quality or compromising on presentation. It is the display in this situation.

The display on the Dell G3 is terrible. Because of its mediocre color accuracy, colors seem washed out. The bezels are rather substantial.

The display is very dim, and using it in direct sunlight would render the laptop useless. The viewing angles and sharpness are the only things that the display gets well.

At best, these two are passable. The Dell G3 has a Full HD (1920 x 1080) IPS display with 60Hz or 120Hz refresh rates.

If you’re playing a game and the frame rate exceeds 60Hz, you’re doing something wrong. There will be screen tearing, stuttering, and ghosting.

You could believe that the Dell G5’s display is superior. It’s not the case. It is brighter than the Dell G3, but not as bright as the competitors. It will still be difficult to utilize it outside.

It is mediocre in terms of color accuracy. The colors are faded out and the image lacks vibrancy. Dell should have supplied a better display for the pricing.

The viewing angles and crispness are the sole redeeming features. There are other possibilities for 60Hz and 144Hz refresh rates.

It’s best to go with the fastest refresh rate possible. Because there will be no visual distortions (screen tearing, stuttering, or ghosting) when gaming.

A 15.6-inch Full HD display is also available on the Dell G5. Dell does not provide a 4K display option.

The screens on the Dell G3 and G5 aren’t the finest.

The sole difference between the Dell G5 and the Dell G3 is that the Dell G5 has a 144Hz refresh rate option. Apart from that, they are almost identical.

Keyboard & Touchpad

The Dell G3 provides a good typing experience for a cheap laptop. While the rest of the keyboard is in blue typefaces, the WASD keys have additional blue accents.

The keyboard does not have RGB backlighting. Instead, blue backlighting is used. The key travel is enough, as is the tactile feedback.

Also included is a Numpad. As a result, the keys will not be full-size. When you push the touchpad, it emits clicky noises and includes Windows Precision and gestures.

Overall, the keyboard is adequate and provides a pleasant typing experience.

The Dell G5 wins this round. It has a deeper key travel and more satisfying tactile feedback. A Keyboard that is easy to use that you can easily type on for long periods.

Some variants have the same keyboard layout as the Dell G3, while others have a standard layout with white lettering.

The keyboard is illuminated in blue. Dell provides a four-zone RGB keyboard as an option. There are blue accents around the borders of the touchpad.

A smooth-surfaced Windows precision and gesture touchpad that gets the job done.

Overall, the Dell G5’s keyboard is superior than the Dell G3’s.

Performance

The most crucial aspect is performance.

Take a look at a fully loaded Dell G3 and G5. The most powerful Dell G3 will contain an Intel Core i7 processor, a GTX 1660 Ti Max-Q graphics card, and 32GB of RAM.

The Dell G5 will sport an Intel Core i7 processor, an RTX 3060 graphics card, and 32GB of RAM.

When you compare these maxed-out setups, you’ll notice a significant difference. The Dell G5 is superior than the Dell G3.

When playing AAA games on the maximum settings, the FPS will be greater than the Dell G3.

It will also perform better on external monitors with greater resolutions than the Dell G3. This isn’t to suggest that the Dell G3 isn’t capable.

You’ll be able to play AAA games on high settings as well. However, if you want something that will last in the future, the Dell G5 is the superior option.

The lowest variants – i5 and GTX 1650 – are also excellent for gaming.

Both the Dell G3 and G5 basic versions can run AAA games at medium to high settings in Full HD quality.

If you’re looking for results, look no further. The Dell G5 will then be the superior option. Because certain versions come with more powerful RTX graphics cards.

Life of the Batteries

Both laptops offer excellent battery life for gaming laptops. The Dell G3 features a 51-watt-hour battery that can last 6-7 hours on medium brightness with Wi-Fi enabled.

The Dell G5, which has a 60 WHr battery, has a similar battery life.

This might be below the average of the 8-hour Life of the Batteries. However, gaming laptops are notoriously known for their 2-3 hour Life of the Batteries. And for both laptops to last this long is impressive.

Which Dell G3 or Dell G5 Should You Buy?

Apart from the fact that their display isn’t up to grade. The Dell G3 and G5 are excellent gaming laptops that will perform well. It’s also simple to choose amongst them.

The mobility, affordability, and thinness of the Dell G3 are its primary assets.

The Dell G5, on the other hand, is more powerful and has a Thunderbolt connector for connecting eGPUs.

To summarize everything. If you’re looking for a cheap portable gaming laptop. The Dell G3 is thus the superior choice.

However, if you want performance and a Thunderbolt port, this is the laptop for you. The laptop you should purchase is the Dell G5.
